According to the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), Carter G. Woodson is the father of Black History.

Founded by Carter G. Woodson in 1915 ASALH is the premier Black Heritage learned society with a strong network of national and international branches and partners whose diverse and inclusive membership will continue the Woodson legacy.

The mission of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History is to promote, research, preserve, interpret and disseminate information about Black life, history and culture to the global community.

In 1926, Present Gerald Ford made it official by pronouncing February as Black History month.

ASALH's Black History theme for 2023 is Black Resilence. This theme is a reminder that Black people have been resilient forever. From the slave trade, Emancipation, Jim Crow, Civil Rights, and continued descrimination Black people have always had to work harder to prove that we are just as good as any other race.
