Can You Count?

Wraping My Arms Around Joy

· Joy

Surely, you’ve heard the phrase, “God won’t give you more than you can bear.” A few months ago, a pastor challenged me to think about that from a different perspective. He said, “God will give you more than you can bear.” He continued to explain that God never intended for us to handle trials alone—He expects us to reach out to Him for help.

When life is tough, I must quickly accept the situation to be more than I can bear. Then, I must look to God for help.

James 1:2-3 reminds me of this, My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience.

Math has never been my strong suit. Just as I'm challenged to master Geometry, Algebra, and Calculus I'm just as puzzled when it comes to understanding this scripture.

The Bible encourages me to count trials as joy. I won’t pretend to fully understand this verse—I am continuing to walk through it and learn from it.

Like the pastor's message, the scripture challenges me to see trials from a different perspective. Instead of being down in the dumps, I should consider trials as a teacher who helps me to learn and grow.

The verse reminds me of the quote by John Maxwell, “Change is inevitable, growth is optional.” The verse teaches me that I have a choice—to either grow or remain stagnate.

I can count… and I choose to learn and grow. I'm learning to count it all joy when I fall into various trials.

To be continued....
