Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, had borne him no children.... (Genesis 16:1a)
Over and over, the story of Abram and Sarai records leaps of faith. First, Abram was commanded by God to leave his family and his native land without a destination.
Then, God made a covenant with Abram that his descendants would outnumber the stars. There was only one problem—Sarai had borne him no children.
I would not have wanted to be in Sarai’s shoes. God made a promise the husband that his seed would be exceedingly great, but the wife doesn’t get pregnant.
Month after month; year after year—surely she’d think her biological clock was winding down. Surely, she’d think missing out on God’s plan would be all her fault. Surely, she’d want to take matters in her own hands.
We’ve all been there—if it’s not working we have to fix it.
This week’s posts will take a look at a woman whose attempts to take matters into her own hands find her in deeper water. As wife of the covenant her faith was also tested.
God never needs our help. He always requires our obedience.
Our capability amounts to nothing compared to God’s infinite power. Regardless of what we think or how we feel, God always has perfect timing. He steps inside of our insufficiencies to accomplish the miraculous.
God’s promises are always “Yes and Amen”. We must resist the temptation of taking matters into our own hands.
