Growing up as a child, I remember my mother saying, “Don’t eat too much. Gluttony is a sin.”
Sure enough, every biblical reference to the word glutton has a negative connotation and a dreadful end. Accompanied by suiters such as drunkenness, disobedience, drowsiness, rebelliousness, rags, and poverty gluttony leads down a horrible path.
Most often referenced in terms of food, Google defines a glutton as a person who is excessively fond of or always eager for something. In my mind excessive and always are the key words.
Proverbs 23:21 says this, “For the drunkard and the glutton will come to poverty, and drowsiness will clothe a man with rags.”
While we might only connect guttony with food, over-indulgence in personal desires and passions will lead to ruin.
Over-consumption can not only be seen in those who drink too much alcohol, but in those to fail to restrict themselves from any pleasure to the point of destruction.
Though we might point out those who waste money and other commodities, many of us waste time with little consideration.
Recognize when enough is enough. Moderation is always the order of the day. Balance is the key to right living. Too much of anything is a cause for caution.
September is “ME” Month
We must evaluate our consumption habits weighing them against our needs and the needs of others. We must control our desires and curve our appetites. We must actively be in the pursuit and practice of self-discipline.
Stop. Back away. Take a break. Change the channel—else our destination will be dreadful.
Listen to my mother who said, “Gluttony is sin.” It doesn’t end well.
