Imagine the Unexpected

April 24, 2024

If you think today’s reality shows are something—you haven’t read the Bible. The story of Sarai and her maid Hagar could be a Lifetime special.

Genesis 16:1b-2 records this, And she had an Egyptian maidservant whose name was Hagar. So Sarai said to Abram, “See now, the Lord has restrained me from bearing children. Please, go in to my maid; perhaps I shall obtain children by her.” And Abram heeded the voice of Sarai.

Sarai’s solution to her infertility problem was to offer her maid as a surrogate. No test-tube babies, the child would be conceived the old fashion way. Abram agreed.

Sometimes, God’s plan just doesn’t make sense. Sometimes, His ways seem too far to the left.

I think Sarai was desperate to make God’s plan come into fruition. In her own way, I think she was trying to make God’s plan make sense.

We’re no different. Most of us have been in a situation where we tried to make the pieces fit from our own perspective. At one time or another, we’ve given in to doing things our way in the name of the Lord. I’m guilty.

Sarai’s life teaches us to stop taking matters into our own hand. Her example should remind us to look beyond our own reality in order to walk in God’s purpose.

God's reality is usually more unlike anything we could ever imagine.
