For years I tried to ignore equations with fractions and my grades suffered for it. Now, I wonder what would have happened if I had faced up to that shortcoming a long time ago…I might have become a great mathematician! Well, I doubt that, but you get the point.
Like me, most of us try to avoid our weaknesses, hide them under a big rock, and walk away as if they don’t exist. Then, we hope that no one else will discover the hidden flaws. Whether we like it or not, our weaknesses will eventually become known to others.
In the Bible's reference of Queen Esther, she is faced with fear, not specifically due to her own limitations but that of her husband, King Xerxes. Some bible scholars consider the king to be weak, lacking foresight, and impulsive. When faced with the annihilation of her people, Queen Esther's only hope was a sacrificial plea before the king in an effort to save the Jews and herself.
The inappropriate handling of weaknesses in ourselves and in others can lead to misfortune and misgiving. Queen Esther knew she was no match for a fickle king, so she asked God to give her insight and direction in approaching a life threatening situation. Showing no disrespect, without manipulation, and with great humility she honored the king and accomplished the task at hand. Wow…What a way to influence!
The Apostle Paul said, "I would rather glory in my weakness because through it, the power of God makes me strong". As we seek to be empowered with strength, we must turn to a God who is able to work through us in spite of our short comings, to work with us even though we are incapable of perfection, and to work in us regardless.
