Jochebed: Mother of Moses

May 9, 2023

How would you define the word “purpose”? Google defines it as the reason for which something is done or created; the reason for which something exists.

Today we look at a mother (Jochebed) who identified purpose in the eyes of her new born and took great risks to ensure that he would survive against all odds.

The book of Exodus commences by describing a life filled with suffering, hardship and male annihilation. In order to control the population of their Israelite slaves the Egyptian's handled them very harshly. This included murdering newborns males. In Exodus Chapter 2 Jochebed saw something different.

Sensing divine purpose in her son, she hid him for three months; put him into a basket; and place it in the crocodile infested waters of the Nile River. Then, she waited for God to move on his behalf. God did just that!

In her God ordained plan, she sent her daughter to keep an eye on the basket to see what would become of the child. To make a long story short, Jochebed was given a salary to nurse her own infant until he was weaned at which time she returned him to Pharaoh’s daughter to be raised in the king's house—that baby was Moses.

God has a plan and a purpose of each and every one of us. He has deposited greatness and planted opportunities for us to be used in His service. Each of us must make ourselves available to sense God's direction even when we don't understand or see the perfect way out.

In the spirit of Motherhood, we should seek the good of all children, nurture their untapped potential and pray that God uses them mightily. This may include placing them into the hands of of someone else.

It’s not too late to become involved in God’s work to raise up a Deliverer!

Challenge:

  • Seek God’s best for your children and family by praying on their behalf
  • Encourage them to walk in ways that please God and by stepping out on faith
  • Support them in their efforts to build a God-fearing society
