A simple lump changed our family’s life. Lula Marie Robinson is my sister. In 1991 she felt a small lump in her breast—changing her life and the lives of our family.
Marie was full of life, lauhghter and had a great sense of style. Time spent with her was time spent smiling—full of fun and games. She was a prankster who loved to play cards. Spades was a family favorite.
My sister was a real “Fashionista”. In my opinion, she was ahead of her time. When on a budget, she scoured the top thrift stores in the wealthiest neighborhoods of the city—name brands only. Leather suits and designer fashion were common to her. Secretly, she had a weave when no one in our neighborhood knew what a weave was.
My fondest memory of her sense of style is when she designed a fabulous gown for the Zulu Black and White Ball in the 70’s (another sister made the dress to perfection). In my mind she was the “Black Jackie O” of the ‘hood.
I love her and I miss her. She was taken to soon and breast cancer was the culpert.
Today, scientific advancements enable more women to experience remission and cures from this disease more often. Let's continue to fight against cancer and increase our knowledge and understanding of how early detection can save lives.
Remembering my sister, Lula Marie.
