Remembering Zee...

October 15, 2021

The name given to her at birth was Mary Jane. I don’t know how she got the nickname Zeada (Zee), but I’m sure there was a fabulous story behind it.

Zee is my sister and the second family member to be diagnosised with breast cancer.

As you might have already discovered, I'm from a family of great story tellers. In my mind, Zee was the best story teller of all. She had a special gift and the ability to have folks sitting on the edge of their seats for hours—and in stiches. She was so funny.

For the kids, she always had a joke. My nieces and nephews couldn't wait for her colorful jokes—some they probably should not have heard.  But time after time, they sat in suspense waiting for the punch line.

Time spent with her was a good time and she was always in the mood for fun. She loved life and this world didn't owe her a thing.

My fondest memory was piling into her car for rides to Lake Pontchartrain on hot summer nights. Back in the day, she was the one who permed my hair.

I love her and I miss her. She was taken too soon and (again) cancer was the culprit.

It’s been more than 20 years since my sister passed away. I continue to pray that there is a cure for breast cancer. I pray that scientists and physicians use the experiences of those who have gone before us to educate and inform us of what we need to do to rid the world of this dreadful disease and save lives.

This month, AWOGI remembers those who have been taken away from us as a result of breast cancer.

Remember my sister, Mary Jane (aka-Zeada; aka-Zee).
