A Mental Health Condition is a Medical Health Condition!
A few years ago, a close family member experienced a mental health episode. We were not sure what to do or where to go. But God had already prepared the path. Nicole McGee and our son were friends. At that time Nicole was the Executive Director for the Alliance of Mental Illness (NAMI) for the state of Louisiana. What a blessing!
Through NAMI, we were able to receive information, education, and insight. We even joined a family support group where other family members shared their personal experiences. What we learned from NAMI helped us to understand options and what to expect from doctors, hospitals, medications, and insurance.
In the African American community, mental illness is not something we talk about. The closest willing discussion is about someone who has had a nervous breakdown…that’s too late.
Depression, anxiety, and schizophrenia, (just to name a few) are serious health conditions, but they can be managed. If you see someone who appears to be in trouble, they probably are and it’s likely that they have been in a state of poor mental health for quite some time. Do what we did and call NAMI today.
If that person is you, it’s ok to say, “I’m not ok.” NAMI also has peer support group options to help you get back on track.
Let’s stop minding our own business. Step up, say something, ask questions, and be nosy. You just might help someone.
Challenge:
- Stop the stigma
- Ask the question “Are you ok?”
- Reach out for help
- Check out a NAMI affiliate in your area (NAMI.org)
