Remembering the Man and the Message
The work and efforts of many African Americans have been stolen or unmentioned. Black History month is an opportunity to learn more about the contributions of many who otherwise would be unknown.
When considering the accomplishments of others, I aim for a deeper understanding of the motive behind their inspiration. By examining their perspective and fortitude I choose to receive elements that will enrich my life.
In Dr. King’s “I Have A Dream” speech, he spoke of a day when his children ‘would not be judged by the color of their skin, but the content of their character’.
My favorite part of that sentence is the reference to ‘content of their character’. These four words are quite intriguing. I choose to dig deeper and question myself about the content of my own character in hopes of re-shaping any hidden flaws or untapped potential for improvement.
My Character-Building Food For Thought:
- How do I determine the content of my own character?
- What standard do I utilize?
- What part does my behavior and actions play in the development of my character?
- What character-building changes can I make to ensure a better me?
I pray that God's Holy Spirit works like truth serum helping me to acknowledge the truth about my own character. Then, like Gatorade deliver power and electrolytes that flows through my daily existence so that I can be better than I think I am.
Thank you (Dr. King) for reminding me that skin color has no bearing on my capacity to bring value to the table. Thank you for reminding me to evaluate the content of my character and strive to be a better person.
