The Cross

As Christians all over the world celebrate and remember the resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus the Christ, one of the most important figures that comes to mind is “The Cross.”

The significance of the cross is that our sinless Lord of Lords and King of Kings was crucified and died on it for sinners.

Although we commemorate the blessings of the cross that has set us free from slavery and sin to redemption and new life with Christ as believers, we also recognize the cross illustrates the rejection, hurt, pain and shame that our Lord and Savior endured by the cruelty of carrying, hanging, bleeding and dying on “the cross” for you and me.

According to Isaiah 53:5, “But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

A soul wrenching verse of the old hymnal by Isaac Watts scripted as, “Thy body slain, sweet Jesus, Thine; And bathed in its own blood.

While the firm mark of wrath divine, His soul in anguish stood.” Early in his life, Jesus knew he had to endure “the cross,” and just as he did, we have a cross to bear also. Jesus says, “whoever wants to be his disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow him” (Luke 9:23). Just as Jesus died on “the cross” for our sins and unrighteousness, we too must “die to this flesh and earthly nature.” And, just as Jesus rose from the dead and is sitting at the right hand of the father making intercession for us, we too by faith are saved by God’s grace to live a meaningful life in Christ. For every burden, trial and tribulation, The Lord our God made provision for us through the cross. Rejoice, and give praise to our Father and God for The Cross.

Points to Ponder:

  1. Christ loved sinners so much that he chose to die on the cross so we may have life.
  2. The cross is a pathway for Christians to salvation.
  3. The mercies of God through our Lord and Savior are attached to the cross
