The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden… or you will die.'" Genesis 3:2-3
Choice…the ability to make a decision when faced with two or more options. Blue Blouse or Red Jacket…. Silver Hoops or Gold Studs....Life or Death!
Since the beginning of time, choice was at the top of God’s agenda. Not interested in robots, He has given each of us the power of choice. Having the ability to choose does not come in the absence of a clear standard. Even when we are short on understanding, God’s standards are clear. Good, bad or indifferent, we must keep in mind that consequence follows every choice.
Not much has changed since that conversation in the Garden between a serpent and the First Lady. Truth is, we are all faced with Eve’s choice....God’s standard versus our desire. Most times, the two don't match.
When exercising our power of choice we must be careful to regulate our emotions, consider biblical principles, and evaluate the long-term consequences for momentary pleasure. Remember this, God’s standards remain clear and our obedience provides protection and a shield from the dreadful.
Challenge: Choose Wisely
- Consider your most recent major life choice
- Consider available options and consequences of each
- Most importantly, ask yourself this question: "Does the Bible have anything to say about that choice?"
