Mediocrity is not an option.
Even though my father didn’t use those exact words—that’s exactly what he meant. He was a stickler for excellence.
“Always do your best in everything, especially if you’re doing something for the Lord” he insisted. In school Bs were never good enough. “You’re a Rivers” he would say, "we make As.”
For me, my dad set in motion a mindset that still encourages me to make him proud. These qualities are grounded in biblical principles.
The Bible is filled with examples of excellence. Here are a few scriptures that come to mind when I think of excellence.
- Ephesians 2:10 “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.”
- 1 Corinthians 10:31 “Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”
- Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
You were not created for mediocrity, but for good works, to give God glory, and by God’s strength you can accomplish just that.
What you do and how you do it should meet your Father’s standard.
Your aim should be to make God look good.
At work and play; in business and personal life; in word and deed, work hard to develop a mindset for excellence.
Remember who your daddy is and make Him proud.
