Do Christians have fun?
When I turned 50, I celebrated with a 70’s party that included a theatrical performance entitled, “BLACK to the 70’s”.
The night was a tribute to the Black Church, Black Movies & TV Shows, and Black Music. I think most folks were surprised and a bit taken-a-back that I (A Preacher's Wife) had the audacity to host a 70's party complete with afros, bell-bottoms, hip-huggers, go-go boots, mini skirts and a Soul Train Line. Child, we had FUN!—good... clean... FUN!
That celebration reminded me of everything my mother stood for—Faith, Family and FUN!
Like a closet comedian, I remember her funny sayings and jokes. She made us laugh even when she was mad at us. She was the Queen of checkers. "King Me!" she'd shout because she always won. She sat on the floor playing jacks with us—she always won that too. And she loved to watch us dance.
As I've grown older, I've gotten the impression that for some Christians, fun is a “No-No”. Sorry, but I beg-the-differ.
Yes, I do enjoy praising God and singing gospel songs, but I also enjoy a good joke and good music that doesn’t have to include the Name of Jesus. And yes—I believe it is possible to honor God and still have clean, wholesome fun. I get that from my mother!
Salvation determines our eternal destiny and that is crucial. But everyday we give honor to God with our life. Our lives should be filled with worship, praise and adoration to God. That should also include smiles, laughs, giggles, celebrations and FUN!
Here are a few scriptures that encourage us to celebrate, be glad and have fun:
- Ecclesiastes 7:14 In the day of prosperity be joyful…
- Ecclesiastes 9:9 Live joyfully with the wife whom you love all the days of your life…
- Psalm 32:11 Be glad in the Lord and rejoice…
