Black Resistance

February 15, 2023

President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month in 1976, calling upon the public to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.”

Black Resistance is the 2023 Black History month theme. Black people have been resilient forever. Through years of slave trading, Jim Crow, civil rights and continued descrimination. We have survived. Through hardship our resistance shines through.

Black History month is an opportunity to reclaim the many acheivements that have been under-valued, unclaimed, stolen or intentionally hidden from the world. When many said that we were second class citizens uncapable of major contributions, Black History month proves that we can take ownership of our right to be here, belong and add lasting value as viable citizens.
