Honor Your Parents

Family Focused

June 3, 2020

If you are fortunate enough to still have either of your parents with you that is a true blessing.

The Bible is very clear regarding the impact of children who honor their parents. Deuteronomy 5:16 tells us just how important our actions are:

‘Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God has commanded you, that your days may be long, and that it may be well with you in the land which the Lord your God is giving you. Our obedience to honor our parents can extend our life and grant God’s blessings.

This verse is straight forward and to the point. Our willingness to take heed will have lasting benefits. I believe God designed the dynamics of family to teach us about relationship. Sacrifice, love, giving sharing, and forgiveness—all elements that teach us how to get along with people and honor God. What we learn at home will be replicated in the street.

Often times, we feel that our parents are supposed to do certain things for us just because they are our parents. After all, we didn't ask to be born—in sass mouth tone. Truth is, as children we are supposed to do certain things because we are their children.

Don’t get into the habit of taken your parents for granted. Do everything you can to show your love, concern and support each and every day. The day will come when you will no longer have the opportunity.

Make the time to call your parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles regularly just to say simple things like: "Hello!" "I was thinking about you today." "I am praying for you." "I love you." "Thank you for all that you have done for our family." "Is there anything I can do for you?" And don't forget to visit.

In the event that your parents or grandparents are no longer with you, extend this courtesy to elderly people near you.
